Instagram DM automation for business: what Meta allows, the 24-hour and human-agent windows, the 1,000-byte limit, and what gets accounts restricted
Replies only — no business-initiated messages, no broadcasts, no templates. 24 hours for any reply, seven days for a human-written one, 1,000 bytes per message. What to automate, what to avoid, and how to move a conversation to WhatsApp with consent.
A business can automate Instagram DMs through Meta's Messenger Platform for Instagram, on a professional account connected to a Facebook Page — but only as replies. Meta permits no business-initiated messaging on Instagram: no templates, no broadcasts, no "hi, we saw you liked our post". A reply is allowed within 24 hours of the customer's last message, extended to seven days only for a message a human actually wrote. The message body is capped at 1,000 bytes, not characters.
What Meta allows
| Instagram DM | ||
|---|---|---|
| Customer writes first | You may reply, automated or not, for 24 hours | Same |
| You write first | Not permitted, at all | A template, charged, with consent |
| After 24 hours | Only a human-written message, tagged as such, within 7 days | A template |
| Broadcasts | None | Marketing templates to consented people |
| Message length | 1,000 bytes — about 333 Devanagari characters | 4,096 characters |
| Price | Free | Per message, by category |
The rule to internalise: on Instagram the customer always opens the door, and every message you send is a reply. A tool that offers an "Instagram campaign" is offering something Meta's API does not permit, and the account that tries it is the account that loses messaging access.
What you need
- An Instagram professional account — Business or Creator.
- A Facebook Page connected to it, in a Business portfolio you control.
- Message access enabled in the Instagram app: Settings › Messages and story replies › Connected tools › Allow access to messages.
- A provider app with the Instagram messaging permissions, connected through Facebook Login for Business.
What automation is worth doing
- The first reply, in the first minute. A DM about a post — "price?", "is this available in M?" — answered at once from the catalogue, with the picture. This is most of the value.
- Qualifying inside the 24 hours. The same questions as on WhatsApp, because the person is on their phone now.
- Moving the conversation to WhatsApp when it needs to continue. "Shall I send the quote on WhatsApp? What's your number?" — a consented move to a channel where you may follow up.
- One record. The person who DMed on Instagram and then messaged on WhatsApp is one contact, one history, one attribution.
What to avoid
- Any tool or script that messages people who did not message you — followers, likers, commenters. It is against policy and it is how accounts get restricted.
- Comment-to-DM automations that send a DM to anyone who comments, without a private reply first. Meta permits a private reply to a comment; it does not permit treating a comment as an opt-in to a campaign.
- Treating the seven-day human-agent window as an automation window. The tag means a person wrote the message; using it on a bot's message is a policy violation with a feature's name.
- Truncating. A reply that stops mid-word at 1,000 bytes is worse than an error you can see.
In Linkubit
Instagram DMs and Messenger are reply-only by construction: a campaign on either channel is unstorable, and the send gate refuses a business-initiated message before any adapter is reached. The human-agent tag is set only on the inbox's human-reply path. The adapter measures the body in bytes and refuses rather than truncates. An Instagram person and a WhatsApp person with the same identity are one contact. Instagram and Messenger are on the Pro plan and up.
Can a business send the first message on Instagram?
No. Meta's Instagram messaging API allows replies only. The customer must message first, or send a message from a story reply, a comment's private reply or an ad's DM button.
How long can I reply after a customer DMs?
24 hours from their last message, for any message. A human-written message, tagged as such, may go up to seven days. After that, nothing until they write again.
Can I run Instagram DM campaigns?
No. There is no template or broadcast mechanism on Instagram, and a tool that claims one is violating policy on your account.
