Lifecycle stage

Definition

A lifecycle stage is where a contact stands with the business: new, qualified, proposal, won, lost — the names are the business's own. Moving a contact forward can require facts (no 'proposal' without a budget), and the pipeline board's columns are the same stages, so a contact and its deal never disagree.

Stages versus scores

A score is a number that goes up and down; a stage is a decision that was made. A rule can move a contact to 'qualified' when the score crosses a line, but the stage is the thing a salesperson reads.

One machine

The board's columns, the contact's stage and the workflow that advances it should be one list. Two copies drift within a week, and the first symptom is a deal in a column the contact is not in.
